Larry Shireman Obituary

Larry Dale Shireman of Burns, passed away at his home on April 6, 2022.

Larry was born on July 27, 1942 in Stover, Mo., to Harry and Loyetta Shireman. He attended  Stover High School and in later years attended the University of North Dakota.

Larry married Joyce Richardson on Nov. 18, 1967 in Independence Mo. They were blessed with one son, David Shireman. Both Larry and Joyce served at the Joseph Smith Historic Site in Nauvoo, Ill. for several years. Joyce passed away in 2006 in Iowa.

Sometime after her passing, Larry got reacquainted with Nadine Sahlberg, who had been an intern at the Joseph Smith Historic Site while Joyce was the site director, who was now living in Illinois.  As they began spending time together, to get each other out of their individual houses, their feelings began to grow into love. Larry and Nadine were married on Oct. 23, 2010 in Fort Madison, Iowa.

They enjoyed taking trips and ended up taking a vacation to Nadine’s home state of Oregon. Larry fell in love with the scenery and especially the absence of pain in his joints!  They decided to move to Burns in 2012.

Larry enjoyed driving around with Nadine to see new spots in the area until a stroke in 2016 made it uncomfortable for him to sit in the car for long time frames.  Cooking, especially on the barbeque, was something he had lots of fun with before his stroke as well. He enjoyed watching shows and movies about cooking, exploration, treasure hunting, criminal investigation and how things work/are made.

After Nadine finally convinced him to let her get a dog, he loved each as they came along too.  Larry also enjoyed listening to audiobooks of many different genres.  He enjoyed talking to people and loved to tell stories about his experiences.

At the beginning of February 2022, Larry was put on Hospice care due to his deteriorating condition from cancer.  He mentioned several times that he was ready to be free of his pain and to move on. Suddenly, on April 5, Larry had a massive decline and on April 6 he passed away.

Larry was an Elder in the Community of Christ Church and pastored congregations over the years. He had a deep love for God and was willing to talk to anyone about his faith and religion if they wanted to.

Larry is survived by his wife, Nadine Shireman of Burns; son, David; daughter-in-law, Nicole; grandson, Xander; and granddaughter, Zoe (Shireman) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Per Larry’s request, there will not be a memorial service and his ashes will be scattered.  If desired, contributions in his memory can be made to Harney County Home Health and Hospice.
