IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Rae
(Fisher) Hosford
January 2, 1937 – October 16, 2024
Shirley passed over to her Salvation on October 16th, 2024. She was comfortably at her home in Hines with her children David and Dianne Hosford and her granddaughter Katie Hosford. She was surrounded by love from family, many friends and the amazing Hospice Team throughout the last part of her journey home.
Shirley was born in Tacoma, Washington and was adopted by her loving parents Jack Henry and Ann Fisher as a newborn. She lived in the Puget Sound for the first part of her life and recounted many fond memories and anecdotes about her life on Day Island just outside of Tacoma including a friendship that would last her lifetime with her partner in crime Duncan Manning. Shirley also had two elder siblings at this time; her brother Jack (a WWII Veteran), and her beloved sister Patricia (Pat) with whom she retained an amazing connection and lifelong love. Her family adopted another child, Ken Fisher when she was a young girl. She never was interested in her birth family because she always believed she got the best family that anyone could ever have. Ann and Henry were not considered her "adoptive" parents, they were her only parents.
Her father was a millwright and moved the family to Oregon when she was school aged and they lived in both Sweet Home and then Grant Pass where Shirley graduated from High School in 1955. After High School she went to secretarial school and then worked at Sprouse Reitz and then at an Insurance office where she would meet the father of her children, William E Hosford. They were married for many years and lived in Beaverton, and Deer Island before moving to Hines in 1971. Shirley started her career in Avon during that period, a job that she would have in some capacity until the age of 80! Most of the people in Harney County knew her as THE Avon Lady and she was considered a part of many families lives because of this. She also worked at the Harney County Assessor's Office for many years and got to know a significant portion of the landowners in the County.
Shirley was a lifelong Christian, settling in at Pioneer Presbyterian Church as soon as the family moved to Hines. She was active in the church choir as well as the community choir and Chamber choir until she was muted by the pandemic in 2020. She continued to sing at the church when the restrictions were lifted, but then became unable to participate due to declining health in 2022. Shirley continued to support her Church family as long as she was able and always considered the congregation there a part of her life. She was an active donor to many charitable organizations and kept several children supported in the World Vision Program.
Shirley loved everyone without condition. She had a 40 year relationship with her partner Dean Van Landuyt as her companion for travel and shenanigans. They loved camping and tromping around the hills looking for arrowheads and artifacts. Shirley had many lifelong friends and will be missed by so many. Some of the words that have been recounted about her since her passing include: funny, kind, brave, beautiful, loyal, sweet, adventurous, mother to many, enemy to none. She was a gardener, a traveler, a friend, and an all-around wonderful human. She was an example of what it means to actually be Christian and will be sorely missed by all of those who knew her!
She is survived by her son David Hosford and his wife Mary, their children Anna and Katie Hosford, her daughter Dianne Hosford, her brother Ken Fisher and several nieces and nephews.
