Jim was born in Burns, October 17, 1935, to Katherine & Ennis Gardner, who already had a 2-year old son Floyd Scott Gardner.

Jim moved to Ashland a year later, where he and his brother attended grade school and middle school. Jim moved back to Burns to attend high school at Crane, where he graduated in 1953. Jim had many jobs around Harney County, including being a ranch hand and working at Hines Lumber Company.

He married a local girl, Patty Colantino, and had 2 children, Vicky Lee and Patrick David, before moving to Sitka, Alaska to make his fortune. Jim loved hunting and fishing and did a lot of both in Harney County and Alaska. While living in Sitka, he was known to take 6 weeks off in August and September, and go north to hunt moose, caribou, mountain sheep, etc. with friends. He raised his family in Sitka. Later he moved to Petersburg, Alaska where he married Bette Louise Power, the love of his life. They moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, for about 15 years before moving back to Burns after he had been gone 43 years.

He was very active in the Moose, including being elected Alaska Moose Assn. President. He was also an Elks member in Alaska and a member of the Masons here in Burns. He loved to travel to conventions and such and did so a lot with the Moose in his younger years.
