Jack A. Lucas died on Nov. 23.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1925, in Chicago, Ill.

Lucas spent his boyhood in Hoopeston, Ill., and was raised by his mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Lucas served the United States during World War II. He was in the U.S. Navy from July 15, 1943, to Dec. 16, 1945. He served as an armed guard on a number of merchant marine ships, including the SS Stell Ranger, the SS Dynasty and the SS WMF Howe. His ships escorted convoys carrying supplies to the troops overseas, travelling the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. While in the Navy, Lucas visited England, Scotland, Ireland, Chile and Manila.

While he was stationed in New Jersey, he met his wife, Marie. Lucas and his wife lived in Illinois and Sayreville, N.J., where they had four daughters — Liz, Martha, Bobbie and Jackie. The home the family lived in Sayreville had one bathroom, which was a challenge for Lucas, the only male in the family.

The love and pride of Lucas’ life was his family, and he stayed very close to all. In total, he had 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Lucas was an industrious man. There were times in his life when he held two jobs, including working early mornings as a milkman. For most of his life he was in retail sales, selling carpet and furniture.

Following his family as they left New Jersey, Lucas and his wife moved to Phoenix, where he retired. He then followed family again, moving to Burns.

Lucas enjoyed sports, politics and a good joke.

Lucas is survived by his wife, Marie; daughters, Elizabeth Goulden of Kingwood, Texas, Martha Denarski and husband Ben of Burns, Bobbie Veneziano and husband Tim of Richland, Wash., and Jackie Turnbull and husband Floyd of Hermiston; sister, Sally Merritt of Oakwood, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Clem.
